Alpenglow!

We have heard about the ‘afterglow’ very often.
The afterglow is an intense red or golden glow of the western atmosphere long after sunset, when most twilight colors might have disappeared.
I was curious to know about the glow seen in the eastern sky after sunset and got this information that I am sharing here, along with my photographs.
This glow is ‘Alpenglow’!
During sunset on clear evenings, the atmosphere around the horizon opposite of the Sun appears as shades of orange and pink. The pink color is due to the sunlight that is shining through denser atmosphere near Earth’s western horizon, and reflecting off the atmosphere on eastern side. This reflection back towards the observer is called backscattering. It creates a pink and orangish stretch near the eastern horizon. The same light is often seen on mountain tops at sunset and hence the term ‘Alpenglow’.

Glory at the end!

Sunsets are romantic!
Whether you are a nature lover or a technocrat, the beauty of sunsets is undeniable. I’m sure there is no one who hasn’t said “wow” after watching the glorious sundown.
The magical view of the setting sun and changing colours of the sky never get old!
Here is a series of sunset pictures captured at Santa Cruz, California. Watched the sunset along with roosting pelicans and cormorants.
I was surprised to notice a peculiar feature- after the initial stages, there was no golden reflection on the water!! I have no explanation…

Sun drops in Pacific...

Aren’t sunsets beautiful? A glorious moment of the day!!
It is delightful for photographers to get that perfect moment, when they are capturing the glory of a setting sun.
Sunsets are among the most beautiful things we’re lucky to see almost every day. That beautiful mix of colors lighting up the sky is just breathtaking!!
Enjoy these sunset scenes captured at Point Reyes National park beach, California.
“Every sunset brings the promise of a new dawn.”
Wishing all a Happy and Healthy New Year!!

Golden hour!!

The glorious hour before the sunset, when the entire skyline seems to glow is Golden hour.
I was lucky to witness this awesome phenomenon at the Golden Gate, San Francisco, when the burning golden ball of sun was dipping in the Pacific Ocean.
The evening was clear without fog, giving a fascinating view of sunset.
The sun lingered on the horizon for a minute or so….and then dripped over and was gone….!

Sunset on a rainy day

It was raining through the afternoon.

By evening when clouds started thinning; hoped to get some sunset pictures at Kozikode (Calicut- Kerala) beach. That was not to happen…it rained intermittently again.

Ah…it is time and waited with the camera for the glorious moment. Raining reduced to a mild drizzle. The scenes started to unfold on a cloudy sky.

And lo, it rained heavily then! After about ten minutes or so, when the raining subsided, the orange ball appeared at the horizon, half immersed in the gloomy sea…

Cloudy, yet beautiful!

Stinson beach, California, was cloudy on that day.
Still waited to witness the glorious phenomenon of sunset.

Couldn’t get the dipping orange ball and I had to be satisfied with the sunset glow on the clouds.

Sharing a few of those scenes here.

Sun sets at Lands End!

Witnessed these sunset scenes at Lands End Lookout in San Francisco.

The winter sunset started at an early hour. Clouds could not suppress the glory of the phenomenon.
And what a glorious finale it was…though the dipping orange ball was not visible in its entirety! A close look will give you a glimpse of the sun in the horizon, through a gap in the clouds.

A Moody Sundown

The day was cloudy and  had intermittent rains, when I visited the beach at Cherai in Kerala.

The sunset was not as bright as one would expect. It was a hide-n-seek, with the sun now behind the clouds, now out of the clouds!

Still, sunset is always a charming and never tiring phenomenon!!

Spectacle from San Simeon

San Simeon – located along California’s scenic Highway 1 – is a perfect coastal yet rural getaway.

Beautiful coast line. Arrived there just in time for sunset, on the way back from Hearst Castle. Captured these moments from a vantage point.

What an amazing view of the sunset!!
