A cute rodent- Indian Palm Squirrel

The Indian palm squirrel (Funambulus palmarum) or three-striped palm squirrel is an adorable species of rodent from India, seen south of the Vindhyas, and Sri Lanka.
According to Indian mythology, a squirrel also helped Lord Rama in the task of building a bridge by moving tiny pebbles to the construction area. When Rama thanked the squirrel by patting its back, his fingers left three stripes.
I should mention about two more Indian squirrels here. In northern India another variety, the 5-striped palm squirrel, is seen.
Malabar giant squirrel or Indian giant squirrel is a large multi-coloured tree squirrel species endemic to forests and woodlands in India. They show lovely colour patterns on their fur coat.

Great photos. I love squirrels. There used to be a local man who regularly fed squirrels in the park and cared for injured one’s. He talked about how safe they are as their diet is so clean. There are squirrels in the park you can hand feed.

I have one in my garden which likes to chew up the cane chiks on my veranda. But they’re quite undeniably cute and very lovable. ππ Very interesting to know their different species too.

They are very cute! We have grey squirrels around us here and I was amused to watch one playing in a park, like a cat with the ‘zoomies’, full of the energy of spring. π

Hi. There’s a pretty big variety of squirrels around the world, I guess. In my region (northeast USA), all of the squirrels are grey.

Yes, there are different varieties of squirrels. In this series my first two posts (1 & 2 of ‘adorable critters’) showcase two types from US, captured during my stay there.
