Grass inflorescence
It may not seem like grasses are flowering plants to a layman as the grass flowers don’t look quite like the showy colorful parts most people recognize as flowers. Grasses are definitely flowering plants.
The flowers or inflorescence is called a “spike” or sometimes a “panicle.” Though individual flowers are not attractive, the inflorescence is very much noticeable and some of the ornamental grasses have pretty spikes.
Grasses belong to a large and nearly ubiquitous family of monocotyledonous flowering plants known as Poaceae or Gramineae. This includes the cereal grasses, bamboos and the grasses of natural grassland and cultivated lawns and pastures.
Some grass flowers are presented in this post.

Such beautiful, delicate grasses, Indira. Nicely captured! I would love to grow some ornamental grasses in my garden. They seem to do well in this area and, as a perennial, they probably don’t need a lot of fussing.

I love grasses – they add so much texture to the garden. And I really fancy growing the Umbrella Grass. It’s such a wonderful shape!

Great post on grasses. I’ve also posted on them before. The ‘umbrella’ grass is from the ‘Cyperaceae’ family which are the ‘sedges’ (a grasslike plant with triangular stems and inconspicuous flowers: https://goo.gl/icwOqY). I shot about four different kinds of those. Great shots and post.
